REDFLY and Other Operating Systems
Written by: Kirt Bailey
We’ve received many inquiries regarding future REDFLY support of other mobile OS’s.
For a number of reasons we chose to target Windows Mobile first, but WM isn’t the only OS on our radar.
We are well aware of the demand for REDFLY to support Blackberry, Android, Symbian and iPhone operating systems.
While I can’t say much for now, we certainly are working towards supporting other operating systems.
Monitor this blog’s RSS feed and you’ll be amongst the first to know when we announce additional device or OS compatibility.

Yesterday morning I had 5 minutes before I left for work– I didn’t want to waste the time but didn’t want to wait for the computer to boot up either.
I turned on the REDFLY and was able to update 3 email-conversations in that time period. Amazing device! I love it on the road and in the morning now as well.

Any word on whether or not you will be supporting the new Sprint Instinct?

Lee,
While we are working on supporting other operating systems, the Instinct is not currently high on the list of candidates due to its proprietary OS.
Thanks,

While I love using the REDFLY with lots of Windows Mobile devices (some not on your compatibility list yet), I do look forward to possible support for my S60 and iPhone devices too. I bought it with the hope that you would eventually add other operating systems, but even if it was just Windows Mobile I would still be pleased with my purchase.

Thanks Matthew,
By the way, I just read your review of the Zinc II. We have a beta driver for the Zinc II now. Let me know if you’re interested and we’ll get it to you to play around.
Thanks,

I am from the UK and here a lot of business people use Nokia E51s & E71s. These are powerful devices but with small screens. If you need Beta testers for your Symbian drivers i would be happy to buy a Redfly and test the s/w for you.

I am very interested in Redfly. I absolutly would love your device to replace the need for a 3g card and a laptop. If I can just use my smartphone AND Refly, I have no need for laptop…
SO, I really need compatibility with these smartphones.
1) Blackberry (Bold, Curve, 88xx, Pearl) When the Bold is released, Doc’s to Go and 3g will be superb!!!
2) HTC/Cingular 8525 with WM 5 and 6.
3) Palm Treo Pro (WM 6)
4) Palm Treo/Centro (Palm OS)
5) iPhone… very obvious, but Apple and Developers need a version of Docs to Go (Data Viz) for real productivity.

So I notice that you don’t mention the Palm OS. Is it also a candidate? Thanks.

Okay, I have now ordered a Redfly. Plan to use it with my new Xperia X1 - hopefully there will be drivers for this device soon. Also keen to use it with a Nokia E71 at some point.

@Jeremy,
Sorry, I doubt that we’ll ever support the current Palm OS (Garnet) as the OS is on its way out and wouldn’t justify all of the development costs. We most certainly will evaluate the opportunity to support Palm’s new OS due sometime next year.
@Jah,
We’re not sure on the Sony Xperia line yet. You can monitor http://www.celiocorp.com/smartphone or comment on this post in the future for an update. As far as the E71 goes, Symbian is certainly on our radar (and the E71 would be one of the first supported phones), but no announcements yet.

Now that I have a Redfly (sed with a HTC TyTn II) I can see the power of the concept. I can see myself using it every day on my 1/2 hr train journey. I think the Redfly would be an ideal companion for slim/small devices like the HTC Diamond. Small powerful devices can be used for heavy buisness use with the Redfly and also be suitbale for the weekend. So support of small Symbian S60 devices like the Nokia E51, E66 & E71 must also represent a great opportunity. Ireally hope you sell enough devices to allow you to invest in other OSs.

At a price point of $199 this piece of technology is very interesting.
If only you could make it work with the Iphone 3G…..

I have been looking for the Redfly for a while now. I desided to buy one and I have to say I really love the concept.
Unfortunatelly our whole company and lots of businesspeople in our country use Blackberry. Can you tell me if your company will support it and maybe when?? I think you will have a big market in front of you to tackle.

I have a Redfly and an Alltel ppc 6800 with WM 6.1. There are two 6800 drivers, a Verizon WM 6.1 and a Sprint WM 6.1 Beta. I’m using the Sprint which works fine, is there any difference and why is one a Beta and the other not? Is there any carrier specific aspect to the drivers? I know Verizon blocks some of the GPS features Sprint doesn’t block on that phone. Alltel doesn’t block any features on the ppc 6800 so I chose the Sprint driver even though it was a Beta.

I would buy this in a heartbeat if it works with a Blackberry. Just spent $500 buying an EEE PC so that I can travel with a decent screen for viewing.
Hope y’all can make this happen soon!

I wish you would reconsider the centro. I have one, and I would use redfly. It seems that verizon is selling a lot of them!
